The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal encounter at Nashville’s federal courthouse in which a security officer shot an armed man who approached the courthouse checkpoint last week.
Law enforcement officials on Monday identified the man as Jack Gregory Henson, 41. He was pronounced dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after members of the U.S. Marshals Service attempted lifesaving measures at the courthouse.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office jointly released partial security-camera footage showing the encounter. In the footage, Henson approaches the checkpoint carrying a pistol and a knife and gestures toward several security officers.
The footage shows Henson stepping toward one officer with the knife in his hand. That officer then shoots him.
Officials said Marshals Service personnel provided lifesaving assistance while awaiting emergency responders. The TBI investigation remains underway.
Governor candidates to debate Oct. 27
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerri Green has agreed to face independent candidates Lauren Pinkston and David Hatley in an Oct. 27 debate at Middle Tennessee State University. The Tennessee Press Association will stream the event for the public.
Green’s decision reverses her earlier position that she would not participate without Republican candidate Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn has declined to debate during both the primary and general election campaigns.
When Green initially declined to appear with Pinkston and Hatley, she pointed to their polling, saying both were well below the 15 percent threshold used for presidential debates. That was the benchmark Green cited in explaining her decision, rather than a stated participation requirement for the MTSU event.
The scheduled debate will give voters an opportunity to hear Green and the two independent candidates in the same forum, with the public able to watch through the association’s stream.
